How Sonotube Concrete Calculator Works
Every number on this page is calculated live in your browser from four inputs. Here is exactly what happens when you move a slider.
Enter your tube size
Pick the Sonotube diameter and the depth of each hole, then set how many piers you are pouring. Presets cover common deck, pergola, fence and commercial jobs.
Volume is calculated per pier
Each tube is treated as a cylinder (V = π × r² × h). If you add a bell footing, the flared base is added as a frustum, then everything is multiplied by your pier count.
Waste margin and bags are applied
Your over-pour margin is added, then the total is divided by standard bag yields — 0.60 cu ft for 80 lb, 0.45 for 60 lb and 0.375 for 50 lb — and rounded up to whole bags.
Materials and method are estimated
The tool estimates weight, #4 rebar, a 4" gravel base, mixing water, form length and cost, and tells you whether bags, a rental mixer or a ready-mix truck makes the most sense.
Sonotube Sizing Chart & Engineering Formula
Calculate any round cylindrical pier volume quickly using the standard cylinder formula.
The Volume Formula
Sonotubes are circular cylinders. The volume in cubic feet is calculated as:
Yards³ = (V in cu ft) / 27
Where radius (r) and height (h) are in feet, or converted from inches by dividing radius by 12.
Frost Line Depth Rule
To prevent frost heave during freezing winter ground expansion, your Sonotube footing must extend at least 6 inches below your local frost line.
- Southern US: 12" - 18"
- Mid-Atlantic / Central: 30" - 36"
- Northern US / Canada: 48" - 60"+
Pouring & Consolidation
When pouring tubes over 36 inches deep, rod or vibrate the mix every 12 inches to remove trapped honeycombs and air pockets.
Install an anchor bolt or post base saddle while the concrete is freshly poured and level.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Sonotubes need to be removed after pouring concrete?
For parts of the tube below ground, it is not strictly necessary to remove the cardboard form, as it will naturally break down over time. However, for any portion above the ground line, peeling off the tube after the concrete cures (usually after 48-72 hours) provides a clean, smooth aesthetic and prevents peeling paper eyesores.
How much concrete should I order: Premix bags or Ready-Mix truck?
A standard rule of thumb is: if your project requires under 1 cubic yard (around 45 bags of 80lb concrete), buying and mixing bagged concrete in a wheelbarrow or rental mixer is generally more economical and easier to stage. If your project exceeds 1.5 to 2 cubic yards, ordering a ready-mix truck saves immense labor and ensures a uniform pour, though short-load delivery fees may apply for orders under 5-6 yards.
How deep should my Sonotube sit in the ground?
Always verify with your local municipality or building inspector. Typically, piers must rest on undisturbed soil at least 6" below the frost penetration depth. Add 4"-6" of crushed stone/gravel in the bottom of the excavation to assist with water drainage and prevent settling.
How many 80 lb bags of concrete do I need for a 10-inch Sonotube?
A 10-inch tube holds about 0.55 cubic feet of concrete per foot of depth, and one 80 lb bag yields about 0.60 cubic feet, so each bag fills roughly 13 inches of tube. A typical 48-inch-deep 10-inch pier needs about 2.2 cubic feet, or 4 bags of 80 lb concrete. Buy one extra bag per few piers to cover spillage and uneven hole walls.
Can I use the calculator with metric measurements?
Yes. Switch to Metric (cm/m) at the top of the page and enter diameter and depth in centimeters. Volume is shown in cubic meters alongside cubic yards and cubic feet, and bag sizes include their kilogram equivalents.
