How Sonotube Cubic Yards Calculator Works?

To get a Sonotube concrete quantity in cubic yards (yd³), the calculator finds the volume in cubic feet (ft³) and divides it by 27. The process takes 4 steps.

  1. Enter tube size

Type the diameter in inches and the depth in inches. Common deck sizes are 8 in, 10 in and 12 in at 36 in to 48 in (0.9 m to 1.2 m) deep.

  2. Enter the tube count

Ready-mix plants sell concrete by the yard for the whole job, so enter every pier that pours on the same day.

  3. Add a waste margin

Set 5% to 10% for over-dug holes and spillage. Ready-mix trucks do not deliver a second small load at the same price, so the margin protects the pour.

  4. Round to the order increment

Read the yd³ total and round up to the supplier increment, which is usually 0.25 yd³ or 0.5 yd³.

Sonotube Cubic Yards Calculator Formula

The Sonotube Cubic Yards Calculator converts cylinder volume into yards in 2 stages.

Cylinder volume

V (ft³) = π × (D ÷ 24)² × (H ÷ 12)

D is diameter in inches and H is height in inches.

Feet to yards

V (yd³) = V (ft³) ÷ 27

1 yd³ is a cube 3 ft on each side, and 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 ft³.

Order quantity

Order (yd³) = V (yd³) × n × (1 + w)

n is the tube count and w is the waste fraction.

Worked example: 10 piers, 12 in × 48 in, 10% waste

  1. One tube = 3.142 ft³ ÷ 27 = 0.1164 yd³
  2. 10 tubes = 1.164 yd³
  3. With 10% waste = 1.280 yd³, so order 1.75 yd³ (1.34 m³)

Sonotube Cubic Yards Calculator Conversion Table

The cubic yards conversion table shows ready-mix quantities for 48 in (1.22 m) deep tubes at 1, 4 and 10 piers.

Most ready-mix plants set a minimum load of 1 yd³ to 3 yd³ and add a short-load fee below that line.

What is Sonotube Cubic Yards Calculator?

A Sonotube Cubic Yards Calculator is a concrete estimating tool that reports round pier and column volume in cubic yards, the unit ready-mix suppliers in the United States (US) and Canada use for pricing and dispatch.

Cubic feet suit bagged concrete, but a ready-mix truck ticket shows yards. The calculator removes the divide-by-27 step and adds the waste margin, so the number on screen is the number to read to the dispatcher. One 12 in × 48 in tube needs 0.116 yd³, and 9 of those tubes fill about 1 yd³.

The tool pairs every yard total with a metric value. 1 yd³ equals 0.7646 m³, which helps on projects with metric drawings.

What are the uses of Sonotube Cubic Yards Calculator?

There are 4 main uses of the Sonotube Cubic Yards Calculator.

  • Ready-mix ordering

Contractors call in an exact yardage for a pier pour and avoid paying for a second truck.

  • Short-load planning

Builders see when a job falls under the plant minimum and decide between a short-load fee and bagged mix.

  • Cost estimates

Estimators multiply the yardage by the local ready-mix price per yard to price the pour.

  • Truck scheduling

Site leads match the total to truck capacity, which is 8 yd³ to 10 yd³ for a standard mixer.
